ARTH – THE PLOT
Pooja (Shabana Azmi) is an orphan girl but had huge dreams such as owning a house. However, she becomes insecure after finding out that she, along with her husband, Inder (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), will be leaving their rented apartment. What's more twisted is that she get keys to a new house from Inder. It is then revealed that he is having an affair with Kavita (Smita Patil). Kavita is the woman with whom he had earned a lot of money in the industry (film).
Previously, Pooja was also helping her maid in a similar situation. Her husband cheated on the maid (played by Rohini Hattangadi). After Inder leaves Pooja for Kavita, she starts living in a woman's hostel with only ₹2000. This was the money she had at the time of her marriage. Then comes Raj (Raj Kiran) to help her in surpassing all the difficulties faced by her as a single person. She gets a job and starts relying morally on herself. This induces a friendship between Raj and Pooja. Now, Kavita has become mentally unstable, resulting in a deepening of her fears of insecurity. Even though Inder had asked Pooja to sign the divorce papers, yet her condition worsens.
By that time Raj had fallen for Pooja, and he decides to propose her. However, he is rejected by Pooja, and nothing seems to convince her. After a lot of persuasions, Pooja tells Raj that she will think about the proposal.
In the meantime, Pooja's maid has saved ₹1000 to secure a good education for her daughter. But her drunk husband has already stolen that money. She becomes furious and decides to find him. She then catches her husband spending all that money on his lover. In the fit of rage, she kills him and confesses to her crime at a police station. Now, she gets worried about her daughter; she calls Pooja, who assures her that she will take care of the daughter.
After this, Kavita's mother (Dina Pathak) along with her doctor (Om Shivpuri), Pooja goes to Kavita to assure her that there is nothing between her and Inder anymore. But this convinces Kavita that it was a big mistake to break Pooja's marriage. Out of guilt, she breaks-up with Inder. Inder then tries to make things better with Pooja but gets rejected.
Finally, Pooja starts living in everyday life with her maid's daughter. She never marries Raj stating that she wants to stay independent and if she marries him, it will only weaken her.
