Vicky Kaushal's latest release, Uri: The Surgical Strike, was leaked from the Tamilrockers piracy forum. The directorial Aditya Dhar is available for download on the website. Certainly, this isn't the first time Tamilrockers has distributed copies of a new edition. Earlier, the hacking platform leaked out Petta, Viswasam, and The Accidental Prime Minister.
Tamil filmmakers waged war against Tamilrockers, but not much has yet come out of it. Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and even Hollywood films failed to avoid Tamilrockers 'curse. The film narrated the story of the Indian Army's surgical strikes against militant launch pads in occupied Kashmir (PoK) in Pakistan in 2016. In the covert action, 35-50 terrorists were reportedly killed in revenge for the Uri terrorist attack, which killed 19 Indian soldiers. Pakistan has subsequently denied the incident.
The unforgiving war drama of Aditya Dhar explores the events that led to the surgical strikes, as seen through the eyes of Major Vihaan Singh Shergill (Vicky Kaushal). He still has personal fights to fight at home, to make it easier for him.
Vicky Kaushal is on a roll at first. Interestingly, he's switched sides here after playing a brave Pakistani Army officer in Raazi and playing an invincible Para (Special Forces) Commando, Indian Army. The star is continuing to rise from strength to strength, justifying the hype around him. His genuine and effortless presence adds depth to this film, which otherwise lacks the palpable intensity you might expect from a war drama. That makes it exciting then is not its execution, but the mission's audacity that it creatively decodes and recreates. Despite knowing the outcome, you watch the events unfold as the intricate project plan is graded with childlike curiosity.
On the technical front, the film scores higher than on artistic. The scenes of battle, ambush, gunfire, fistfights, sniper shots are being fired in realistic terms. The camera follows the soldiers like a shadow, tactfully. Sound effects are important for fighting film narrative, and for most parts, this war drama uses them effectively. The sounds of guns and bullets are well recorded, but some needless noises (loud voices, noisy footsteps) ruin a covert mission's very intent.
